OVERVIEW

This Memorial Day event brings our community together to honor the brave men and women who served our country. By placing flowers on their headstones, we ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.

INSPIRATION

Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed each year on the last Monday in May. The holiday honors and mourns military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day in the time period following the Civil War. During that time, graves of fallen soldiers were decorated with flowers. Today, on Memorial Day at national cemeteries across the nation, Americans gather to honor those who selflessly gave their lives in service to our country by participating in the decoration of graves with flowers. Mavs Honor aims to educate and ensure the continuation of this patriotic tradition.

Cooper & Eloise at cemetery

"Our family developed an annual tradition dating back to our arrival in Houston over a decade ago: visiting the Houston National Cemetery each Memorial Day in order to place flowers on headstones in advance of the larger public ceremony that follows. We had begun this tradition as our own way to recognize those in our family who had served, but it led us to learn and appreciate the incredible sacrifice that so many service men and women make in the United States. Today, there are over 111,000 veterans (and spouses) buried at Houston National Cemetery and we have experienced that laying flowers is just one of many ways to pay tribute."

"My grandfather and grandmother are both buried at the Houston National Cemetery. He was a Purple Heart awarded Vietnam Veteran. It would be an honor to bring my fellow Mavs to join us in remembrance of him and all of the other veterans who are buried at Houston National Cemetery."
